THE FOG

This week I'm honored to share such an inspirational piece by my dear friend, Talia Fulks.

11/13/2019

Ventura, California

Let's talk.

Pull up a seat by the fire and tell me your thoughts. We'll explore night sounds and constellations. Let's laugh about the places we've lived-

together and apart.

Take deep breaths and let out big sighs.

Open another bottle of wine and let the night slip by.

Let's talk about

how heartbreak changes you.

And how grace and humanity are opposites

when you're sticking your pieces together.

The only way is straight through the storm.

You must experience

the dark, ugly, messy reflection of yourself before

you get to the other side.

Let's talk

about how to outmaneuver your demons on a 2600-mile road-trip. Or, how to make your demons into your friends

with a little kindness and self-forgiveness.

Let's talk about how to heal.

Let's talk about the fog.

We can discuss how beautiful the fog is

when it masks barges like giants on the ocean. Or,

how it drifts across currents on mountain sides, How

sometimes it makes the world feel like a faery tale.

But there are also times when it's

terrifying;

when it descends on your mind without warning and you can no longer see the exit signs.

And suddenly you hear howls and echoes from a past that you had promised yourself you'd left behind.

Didn't we talk about comforting your demons?

Take up your mantle as Dragon Slayer, even though

you're not sure you have power and confidence-

Be the hero of your own story.

Let's talk about Death.

Let's talk about how any conversation about Death

is really a conversation about Life. And no matter

how big and mighty your pretensions are,

your moral superiority will end you up in the same

place as the most morally corrupt.

So let's talk about Death.

Speak plainly.

It's frightening to not know, or maybe we think

we know because in so many we experience Death daily.

Not just in killing house plants or running over squirrels, but

the death of ourselves-

Which is a little further into philosophy than I intended,

but necessary to prove the point.

The heartbreak is a form of death, and the truest experience in life.

So, let's talk about how to handle a breakup.

Firstly, don't.

Don't handle it, control it, or hold any expectation that

its going to be anything other than

a fucked-up mess.

Why?

Because you're dying. And dying is not a graceful process.

So, the sooner you embrace the fall the sooner you will understand

your transformation.

Most importantly,

give it time:

and room to breathe.

Your experience does not follow a linear path,

and there is no roadmap out of the fog.

Remember to breathe and uncoil

the yarn inside your chest.

Remember to feel the sun. Maybe

try to see the ocean.

Remember to embrace silence as completely

as you embrace your demons.

And that you will survive this, too.
